The
Center for Egyptian Women's Legal Assistance (CEWLA) was founded
in November 1995. The legal status of CEWLA: The Center for Egyptian
Women's Legal Assistance is a private non-profit organization.
It works jointly with the Arab Office for Law directed by Mr.
Yasser Abdel Jawad and provides legal representation to women
seeking redress before the courts.
Located in Boulak El Dkarour, it is considered one of the leading
centers that are concerned with woman's rights from a legal perspective.
The
center activities commenced five years ago, and focused primarily
on the provision of legal services. Providing these services entails
assisting the poor women in having official documents issued for
them (such as identification card, birth certificate, and other
official documents to receive pension schemes.
In
the beginning the center started to deal with a wide stratum of
women particularly in Boulaq El Dkakrour area (urban & populous
mostly poor). The area proved to be in a cute need of such services,
and the team of work soon endeavored to expand its activities
and diversify its services. It soon incorporated other activities
such as raising women's awareness of their legal rights and more
general rights as women, adoption of legal cases, provision of
legal counseling over the phone, in addition to various other
ideas adopted by the center units subsequently established).
